Swimming with a spray tan is entirely possible (so long as your tan is fully developed),  however, the lifespan and ongoing look of your tan will depend on how much time you spend in the water, and how you choose to dry off.  It’s true that chlorine can be detrimental to your spray tan, and may cause slight fading. The nature of this fading, however, is not normally major and can be prevented in part both by spending small amounts of time in the water, and patting yourself (instead of harsh rubbing) dry with a soft towel upon exiting. Using a moisturiser after your pool session should assist further in preventing tan wear.

Our tanning team recommend taking the following steps in preparation for your spray tan in order to ensure an optimal, long-lasting finish: 

• The evening before or morning of your treatment, exfoliate your entire body using a gentle polish. Pay special attention to dry areas of your body such as hands, elbows, knees and feet.
• Tackle existing areas of self-tan buildup using St.Tropez Tan Detox at least 12 hours prior to your treatment.
• Waxing or shaving should be completed at least 24 hours before treatment in order to reduce sensitivity.
• Don’t apply any type of perfume, deodorant or aromatherapy oils on the day of your treatment. 
• Avoid staining and ensure your comfort post-treatment by wearing dark, loose-fitting clothing and underwear to your appointment.

Spray tanning is a highly popular method of safe, sunless tanning. Throughout this service, trained beauticians use a spray tan machine and ‘gun’ to gently apply a fine mist of tanning solution onto the body and face. In order to get the best results from a full body spray tan service, clients most often attend dressed in a bikini (dark in colour, or that can be stained without issue), their own knickers, disposable knickers provided by the salon, or wear nothing at all. Any clothes worn will block the tan coverage as a bikini would in the sun, meaning it’s best to wear minimal style clothing such as a thong if anything at all for your appointment. Ultimately, your choice of clothing comes down to your desired look and comfort – however, all jewellery must be removed in advance of your tan. Your salon should provide you with a hair net to wear for the duration of your appointment.

A spray tan appointment slot is on average 30 minutes. This should allow time for a short consultation with your beautician regarding your skin type and desired shade, undressing, tanning, initial drying, and re-dressing. The development time for a spray tan depends on the product used. Traditional spray tan products can take up to 12 hours to develop fully, however, a number of salons now offer a selection of express or accelerated spray tan options – designed to deliver the same deep shades in anywhere from one to five hours. Tanning in the sun, or in sunbeds is generally considered bad for the skin, often leading to excessive exposure to harmful UV rays –  increasing risks of premature skin aging, dark spots, sun spots, and skin cancer. Sunless, or UV-free tanning provides a safer way to achieve a golden glow. Its active ingredient, DHA, creates a tan without sunlight by reacting with the amino acids in the very top layers of the skin, darkening it temporarily. Tans achieved this way will last from 7 to upwards of 10 days depending on how well the skin is cared for throughout this time, and don’t pose any of the risks listed above. It should be noted, however, that spray tan mist should not be breathed in.

Ultimately, your shade of tan should be in line with your desired look and preferences, meaning you’ll get to make the final decision with regard to the product used on your skin – however, our team is always available to advise on shades and finish. For those with very pale or fair skin and seeking a natural look, SMB Beauty’s spray tanning experts recommend opting for one shade lighter than their desired look in a light golden tone for their first application. Once you’ve chosen your therapist, you’ll be able to see an overview of their availability in calendar format and select a date and time that works for you. We appreciate that sometimes you may need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. In order to keep things running as smoothly as possible on our side, we kindly request that at least 24 hours notice (but ideally 48 hours) be provided for cancellations. This allows the opportunity for someone else to schedule an appointment. SMB Beauty appointments must be pre-paid. Unfortunately, if your appointment is cancelled with under 24 hours of notice, you won’t receive a refund.  In case of an emergency less than 24 hours prior to your appointment, please contact our friendly reception team. We’ll be happy to help.
